On Friday, May 22, 2020 Miralago Estates in Parkland, Florida had its first-ever Disney character parade.
The characters arrived at 5:30 pm in costume and parked themselves all around Miralago.
A scavenger hunt was created for children to check off the Disney characters they had seen. Families toured the neighborhood on cars, golf carts, bicycles, and by foot to see all of the characters.
The event was the brainchild of Allison Gruber Weiss who organized the hiring of characters and collecting donations from residents in order to put the event together. Residents donated between $10 to $60 to make this event possible. In total, $1,500 was raised making it possible to have 25 characters.
The characters were hired from True Character Parties, a company based in Parkland. Residents were able to see Disney princesses, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Star Wars characters, and Marvel Superheroes.
“A lot of people miss the normalcy of life and have been unable to go anywhere. Disney is the happiest place on earth, so I figured if we can’t go to Disney we will just bring Disney to us,” said Gruber Weiss, an Audiologist who loves planning things.
Gruber Weiss got the idea after she had taken her daughters to a similar event in another community; it made them so happy that she wanted to bring that kind of happiness to the children of Miralago.
While it took a lot to plan, Gruber Weiss said it was “…definitely worth it when I saw all of the children and adults smiling.”
According to Gruber Weiss, it may even become an annual event if people want it to happen.
“Maybe next time we can have the characters drive around and have all the residents sit on their driveways and watch a character parade,” said Gruber Weiss.
